HRNJ-Uganda alert, Human Rights Commission adjourns journalist’s case

Kampala, 7th/August/2014,  The Human Rights Commission has adjourned a case in which Gideon Tugume, a journalist previously working with Capital F.M sued the Attorney General for damages accruing from injuries he sustained after being allegedly shot by police in 2011. Tugume who was shot below his right knee and wounded by the body guard to the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kaihura while covering the return of Dr. Kiiza Besigye from treatment in Nairobi, failed to appear before the Human Rights Commission to attend the hearing of his case, this afternoon because he was under detention by the Police over allegations of theft.  Gideon was arrested on Friday/ 1st/ 2014 and has since then been incarcerated at the Central Police Station in Kampala, under S.D 42/21/07/14.

HRNJ-Uganda this afternoon contacted the office of the OC CID Kampala and the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Enanga over Gideon’s arrest, and we are hopeful that he will soon be released, having spent a week in detention, over and above the legally prescribed 48 hours.

Gideon is expected to appear later this month at the Human Rights Commission before Commissioner Akurut Violet, to proceed with the hearing of the case in which he sued the Attorney General.
